wedding photography contract

Wedding photography is an incredibly rewarding career, but things can happen, so you absolutely must have a wedding photography contract.

The single hardest thing you’ll do on your wedding photography journey is try to make peace with what you want to deliver and what the client expects. If you don’t make it crystal clear in the initial meetings with your prospective clients how you work and what they should expect, then you are laying a shaky foundation.

Always be upfront with what type of pictures you take, do not try to be a people pleaser. If they are asking you to work in a way that is not familiar to you, simply do not take the booking, it will cost you dearly in the long run.

This is particularly true for those just starting out. You’re trying to find your style, your voice. It can be too tempting to just jump at every opportunity offered to you.

As a photographer, you want to capture the most beautiful moments of a couple’s special day, but you also HAVE to protect yourself and your business. Being clear with your initial communication will do most of the work for you. Don’t take on a job where the client wants a two hour couples shoot and you want to shoot documentary pictures, it will do lasting damage.

Make sure that the client knows what they are signing up for, and have a bulletproof contract that backs up everything you have discussed and clearly states all of the terms of your employment.

What to include in your wedding photography contract?

A wedding photography contract is a legally binding agreement between you and your client that outlines the terms and conditions of your services. It protects both parties and ensures that there are no misunderstandings or surprises on the wedding day.

To help you get started, I’ve created a sample wedding photography contract that you can use as a template for your own. You can copy and paste it into a document and then customize it to suit your specific needs and situation. However, it’s important to remember that every wedding is unique, and you should always consult with a lawyer to ensure that your contract is legally sound.

More importantly I AM NOT A LAWYER.

Whilst you are free to use the template below, it is imperative that you seek legal advice. Why? I work in the UK, the laws here may be very, very different to those in your country.

Having a written contract is of vital importance for any wedding photography job. Too many times have I seen articles on competing photography blogs where the issues raised by the clients could have easily been resolved if there was a clearly written and agreed upon set of terms and conditions.

If you’re just starting out. DO NOT TAKE ANY CHANCES.

Even if you’re shooting a friends wedding. Always have a contract, always have them sign it, always keep a copy and give them a copy. Never assume anything when it comes to your business, make sure it’s written down.

Below I’ve written a template you can use. Copy and Paste it into a word document and edit as needed. Once again. ALWAYS SEEK LEGAL ADVICE FROM A PROFESSIONAL IN YOUR COUNTRY.
